Story Mode is the main mode for all Baldi's Basics game series, except for Baldi's Basics Plus and all demos.

Phases

Phase 1: Beginning Mode

When the game begins, the player will be greeted with Baldi, who will explain how the game works. Once the player enters a classroom, they will find a notebook. Interacting with it causes the You Can Think Pad to appear onscreen, with Baldi's face shown explaining how the player can use it to answer math problems. The first notebook will be simple and doable. Baldi congratulates the player and gives them a Quarter when they have answered all of the problems correctly. In Demo Style of Classic Remastered, the problem will be given in a Baldi's Math Machine and the player has to pick the correct number balloon to answer a question.

In Baldi's Basics Birthday Bash and Party Style of Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered, Baldi will give a present instead of a Quarter after answering all problems correctly in the first notebooks.

Going to the second notebook, the two questions will be normal but the third is a jumble of randomized numbers and letters. When Baldi says the numbers for the third question, this will prompt a loud glitchy noise rather than a number. The player cannot solve this question (unless using a mod or cheat), so to progress, they must answer it incorrectly, which will jump to the next stage of the game. In Demo Style of Classic Remastered, the second problem in Baldi's Math Machine is always glitched out and all number balloons are wrong answer.

Phase 2: Spoop Mode

Baldi will start chasing the player using a ruler, and each notebook they collect will make him go faster since the third question is unsolvable. However, the Math Machine in Demo Style is not glitched out and the player can make Baldi happy for a short time by answering the problem correctly. Except for Demo Style, he reminds the player that he gets angrier for every problem they get wrong. If Baldi reaches the player, it will cause game over.

The goal of this game mode is to collect all seven notebooks in the classrooms while avoiding or challenging the characters. When this phase starts, there are five other notebooks to find.

Phase 3: Finale Mode

Once the player collects all the notebooks, the player will be "greeted" with Baldi's voice over the intercom saying the following:

"Congratulations! You found all seven notebooks! Now all you need to do is... GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!! Hahahaaaaaa!"

During this phase, if the player reaches one of the exits, it will be blocked off at the last second, replaced by a wall with blocks that indicate a rough map of the Schoolhouse, including a "You are here" indicator. The player must activate three exits, and then go through the fourth one to win the game. However, it is challenging to complete this task at this point, as Baldi moves extremely fast, and the exits are all at the outskirts of the school, one being in the cafeteria. Additionally, Arts and Crafters becomes hostile and he will charge at the player if looked at and then teleport them and Baldi back to where they started. In Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered, he will teleport the player and Baldi to one of the random exits nearby.

In Baldi's Basics Classic and Birthday Bash, after going to one exit, the whole school will turn red. Reaching two exits results in an ear-splitting pitch-rising static sound playing until the player wins or loses. Reaching three exits will cause the sound's pitch to gradually get louder in order to put pressure on the player.

In Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered, Schoolhouse Escape will play during this phase. The first exit will cause the school to gradually turn red and the music will get slower. The second exit will make a screeching noise and the third exit will make the red lights effect stronger and more screeching noises will play. Additionally, when playing with the Lights Out Fun Setting, the school will not turn red, but the noises will still play.

In Baldi's Basics Birthday Bash and Party Style, the cafeteria exit will appear after reaching the other three exits in the hallways.

In Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered, completing Story Mode in Classic Style, Party Style, and Demo Style for the first time will unlock Mirror Mode, Lights Out, and Hard Mode respectively. Also, after NULL Style is completed, the quote "GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!!" is replaced with "Find a way out before I catch you!".
